[Review] Digimon Adventure tri. 2 Ketsui

Better than the first film.

The first Digimon Adventure tri. film was pretty much a disappointment. It’s the most disappointing anime in 2015. The second was released on March 12, 2016 which just one day before I write this post. My impression with the second film is mainly (but not mostly) positive, unlike the first film. But still, this film need a lot of tweak everywhere to make it more sensible.

Let’s start with the story. We got less (stupid) battle this time. That is not good because this film should provide more exciting battle. The total time of battle scene is just around 10 minutes compared to the 84 minutes of the total duration. So, it’s just around 12%. However, since the battle of Digimon tend to be not consistent and awful or even horrible, less battle makes me complain less.

Instead of battle, we focus more on the characters, mainly Joe, Mimi, and Meiko. Leomon is making appearance again here! And just like usual, he is going to die (again)! Taichi and Yamato are still not getting friendlier since the last incident. Ken suddenly appears again with Digimon Emperor clothes. It seems that his heart is not that pure after all. He makes the same mistake again by tempting to get into the dark side of the force. Even worse, he takes Imperialdramon with him.

As you can see from the trailer and poster, Gomamon will evolve into Vikemon and Palmon will evolve into Rosemon. And they just evolve for no reason! What the hell is going on since all of this time?! This does not make sense! Okay… To the battle scene. Imperialdramon is the enemy this time. And perhaps Imperialdramon hasn’t been fighting for too long. He can’t even kill Gomamon and Togemon. Also, following Omegamon from the first episode, Imperialdramon also hasn’t implemented quick charge for his Mega Death attack. And yeah… Vike and Rosemon scene in this film is less than 2 minutes unfortunately.

Now, the good thing with this second film is the animation quality. It’s much better than the first film. I’d say the first film looks like a 2005 anime, right? The second film is much more acceptable as a 2011 anime. Yeah still lagging, but the improvement from 2011 to 2015 is not as far as the improvement from 2005 to 2011. I am still saying that Infinite Stratos which is a 2011 anime still looks better than this Digimon film. But at least this film is catching up.

The music is basically the same as the first film, but a tiny bit better. Still not ideal. Just good in the theme song but lacking in background music. The ending theme this time is Seven instead of I Wish. They are trying to give nostalgic feeling with this film after all but still not enough for me.

Final Thoughts
Main improvement with this second film is the story telling and animation quality. Yes, Story is still the weakest part of this second film. Battle scene is still lacking. They should have learned from Dragon Ball film when making the battle scene. At least the animation improves nicely compared to the first film which looks like a low budget anime. I hope they can improve even further in the third movie and eliminates my main complains, story and battle scene.

Story 6
Animation 6
Sounds & Musics 6
